Federal pay rates are falling nearly 25% short of the private sector

The gap between private and federal sector salaries is shrinking, but federal employees on the General Schedule are still earning 24.72% less than private sector employees in comparable jobs.

The wage gap between federal and private sector salaries shrunk by about 3% over the last year, according to fiscal 2024 wage data from a report the Federal Salary Council published Monday. The previous year, the federal-private wage gap was 27.54%.

Still, the National Treasury Employees Union described the nearly 25% gap as a clear sign that higher wages are necessary for the government to be able to effectively compete with the private sector for talent.

“It is a loss to our country when highly qualified professionals turn away from critical public service jobs because the paychecks can’t keep up with for-profit corporations,” said NTEU National President Doreen Greenwald, a member of the Federal Salary Council. “We call on Congress and the White House to make sure federal salaries don’t lose ground in 2025.”

How a $60B IRS modernization fund is driving a higher standard for customer experience

The IRS is setting a higher standard of customer service for taxpayers by tapping into billions of dollars in a multi-year modernization fund.

The IRS, under the Inflation Reduction Act, received about $60 billion to rebuild its workforce and modernize its legacy IT systems over the next decade.

Fumi Tamaki, the IRS’ chief taxpayer experience officer, said the agency is focused on delivering “impactful service” to the public.

“The funding that we received, it is enabling us to accelerate a lot of the things that the Internal Revenue Service wanted to do for a very long time,” Tamaki said.  “It’s a very exciting time to be at the IRS, because the focus on service is just tremendous right now.”

The IRS is designated as a High-Impact Service Provider, because of its relationship to taxpayers.  It received more than 132 million individual tax returns in fiscal 2024.

As the federal government’s primary source of revenue, it also provides equally valuable service to other federal agencies.

Over 800 IRS Employees owe millions in back taxes after audits pushed by Ernst - Washington Examiner

EXCLUSIVE — Over 800 Internal Revenue Service employees still owe millions in back taxes despite heavy criticism from Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), who is hoping the level of tax waste will be squashed by billionaire Elon Musk, the newly tapped co-leader of the Department of Government Efficiency.

In a letter to the Iowa senator sent on Nov. 8 and shared exclusively with the Washington Examiner, the IRS noted that of the 2,044 employees who reported having balances totaling more than $12 million, 860 employees still have not paid overdue taxes. Only 20 of the 70 employees who “willfully evaded” paying their taxes were removed.

By highlighting these issues, we hope to foster an environment where federal managers feel supported, empowered, and equipped to succeed.

Your dedication to our mission is what drives our success. Thank you for being an integral part of PMA as we work to enhance the experience of all IRS managers. Together, we will continue to make a meaningful difference.
